Design Brief
For this project, I was challenged to create a self-directed capstone project that contained identifiable influences from three visual mentors. We were given the freedom to select any artistic medium and subject matter of our choosing. The goal of this opportunity was to showcase an understanding of the elements & principles of design, such as balance, symmetry, unity, composition, and movement.
Proposal
Because this was a complete self-directed project, I was instructed to decide my own project timeline, medium, and concept. I knew early on that I wanted my project to be created in a digital format and that I wanted it to be a social activism campaign. I have always been passionate about climate activism and feel disheartened by the lack of urgency to address this very pressing issue, so I decided to make climate change the subject of my work. Once I had settled on the topic of my content, I then defined the three creative mentors I would use as inspiration and collected examples of their work that contained elements I hoped to incorporate into my own compositions. I also researched the issue itself and created a mood board of potential visuals.
Design Statement
For my capstone project, I decided to create an ad campaign centered around The Green New Deal, which is a proposal that addresses climate change. I decided to include children as the focal point of each piece in order to emphasize the climate crisis’s impact on future generations. Because this is a multi-poster campaign, I wanted each of the posters to address a different effect of climate change. My first poster highlights the issue of rising sea levels, my second poster touches on the issue of wildfires, and my final poster addresses greenhouse gases and how they are causing the planet to warm. To ensure the campaign felt unified, I kept each child's photo in black and white, used a white stroke around the cutouts, and included the Green New Deal's logo mark in the lower right corner. I also set each of the taglines in a neutral sans serif font, using uppercase, italicized letters to emphasize the importance and urgency of this issue.
