Design Brief
For this project, I was tasked with creating a multi-page booklet that explored a topic I felt passionate about. The booklet had to have a cohesive, branded visual language, and its elements were to be driven by a clear content strategy, which would be applied throughout the multi-page format.
Research and Development
As an avid baker myself, I decided to explore the topic of artisanal bread local to my region of San Diego, CA. I began the design process by creating a mood board, exploring typeface options, and sketching out potential compositions.
Once I mapped out the approach I was going to take, I began to collect the imagery and information that would be featured in my book. I started by exploring local bakeries and defining which ones I would feature. Once I had my list, I visited each of the bakeries to take photos and to get a better understanding of each of their particular environments. At some locations, I even purchased bread and gave it a glamorous photoshoot (then devoured it, of course). I also researched each of the bakeries to get information about their histories, their impact on the community, and their most popular items, and used this information to write the book's content.
Designer Statement
For my passion guidebook, I settled on a sleek and elegant design system. My goal was to design each page in an interesting way, simultaneously implementing a sense of variety and unity. To achieve this, I used the color black, which allowed for the bread to act in stark contrast and assert itself as the focal point of the book. I chose a stylish and distinct display font for my headers and offset it with a more neutral serif body type.
Methods used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop
